Before laser printers, before ink jet printers, before dot matrix printers, there were only line printer.  A line printer could only print characters.  It functioned much like a typewriter, by smashing a metal cast of a letter into a carbon ribbon which, in turn, left an impression of the letter on the paper behind it.

This image was created by over printing (printing many letters on top of each other) to create the dark areas.
